What I Wore Wednesdays: School Projects

Ok, school projects? Many of you know I no longer teach in the public school setting and we didn’t move here to extend my schooling (it was the Hubs;), but when the classroom calls its hard to stay away. After … Continue reading

Slow Design

Sorry for the delay of my Friday Post! I have been overwhelmed this week by the outpouring of support in starting this blog! It has made me much busier than expected, and I’ve made so many connections already that my cup overflows. (a small shout out to my Canadian and European followers you know who you are!)

I know this week I have filled your inboxes with my ramblings about Vintage Clothing, and I promise I have more to talk about, but if you know me it does consume my life.  In addition to that I felt it appropriate to tell you a little about “Slow Design” and where I will be tonight and tomorrow morning in support of this movement. Some of you may know that as of this week it has been one year since the horrible tragedy in Bangladesh, and as someone put it on instagram, “remember people make your clothes, not robots.” Individual people, sometimes in terrible working conditions and we never look beyond the brand printed in the label. In the year since there has been a huge jump in the awareness of where our clothes come from and a deep desire to “get to know” the maker. I am thankful there are organizations like Zady and the Bluelace Project, that are much bigger than I that help spread awareness, and connect makers, to form a driving force in changing minds about what is fashion and design. (side note there are many more organizations than just the two I mentioned. If you would like a list please feel free to email me.)

Tonight I’m heading over to 701 Whaley  to hear Leigh and Sally speak about Southern Slow Design. My friend Shanika has a more in-depth post about tonight over on Fig.

I will be sure to post pictures on my Instagram page so you can follow along. Without this blog being to wordy and I know its full of links, below is whats mentioned in this blog. Please go check them out and follow their Facebook pages if you haven’t already and show your support for the Slow Design movement. Also tomorrow I will be vending at Soda City with Ten and Nine Vintage Supply Co, because one of the best ways to support Slow Design is staying involved in your community and supporting the makers at your local market. I can’t say enough about what this market has done for the re-development of Columbia’s Main Street.

Until next week! Cheers!

What I’m Wearing Wednesdays: Jumper

I must admit. I love my family, but I was not blessed with the best genes. Wearing Vintage was an environmental and fashion conscience decision of mine, not because I magically look great in it. Being stuck in the middle of petite and normal, my torso is the length of my hand! No seriously its ridiculous! Everyday I have to try and stay away from the “frumpiness” that my body seems to accept as it own! Wearing Vintage has made me more conscience of what styles look good on me and how to work with my body not fight against it to fit into the “fast fashion” that is plaguing us today!

Because of this I have my vintage altered most of the time or I pair it with something new. Today I’m wearing a Jumper.

A denim short one to be exact. Most people stay away from these as I did for many years because a Jumper also requires you to plan out your day. As comfortable as they are and super cute, they do have some flaws.

1. Getting them on and off can be a problem for some. Especially if it is vintage. It really needs to be tailored for you or you might get stuck;) or tear a seam forcing it.

2. Who wants to go through all that trouble when going to the bathroom! But if you are aware of what you are doing throughout the day and plan accordingly, you can make sure you have plenty of time to put yourself back together after going to the restroom.

I’m glad they are making a comeback. They are adorable and can eliminate the need to find that perfect top to go with those jeans. Also belted (if you know me you know I love a good leather belt) it can change the look just enough that it works for almost any body type. Much like a good tunic dress its a great go to outfit in a crunch and this morning my hair hates me so its up in my favorite 1940’s red bandana. Also I’m not going to lie I wear this jumper so I can pair it with my Vintage Italian leather oxfords. I picked these for my shop but could not give them up!
